Keeping a pet as a Shared Ownership customer

Pets bring joy and companionship, but before getting one, you must ask for permission. This helps ensure:

  • Your home is suitable for your chosen pet

  • Your pet won’t cause issues in the community, such as noise disturbances or dog fouling

We understand that pets are part of the family, so we aim to be as flexible as possible with pet requests, but some exceptions apply. You cannot keep any dog breeds banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

If you are looking at buying one of our shared ownership homes and already have a pet, please contact our sales team.

Looking after your pet
Owning a pet is a big commitment. Before applying for permission, make sure you understand the responsibilities involved. Visit the RSPCA website for expert pet care advice.

All pet owners must sign an acceptable behaviour agreement, ensuring their pets are well cared for and do not cause a nuisance to neighbours. If this agreement is not followed, we may ask you to rehome your pet.

You must also comply with any relevant laws, such as microchipping your dog.

XL Bully breeds
We no longer accept requests to keep XL Bully breeds.

If you're an existing Home Group customer who has previously been granted permission, you must comply with the latest government regulations:

Are you concerned about a dangerous dog in your community?

If there is immediate danger contact the police on 999.

Otherwise, contact the police on 101 or your local dog warden.

Report nuisance noise or anti-social behaviour?

If an animal or pet is causing nuisance noise (persistent or loud noise) or anti-social behaviour you can report it to Home Group.
